At the opening of the Legal Year, it was announced that more pro bono legal services to help the needy will be made available. Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong said that the Singapore Institute of Legal Education had put together a proposal for mandatory pro bono programme for law undergraduates to which the two law schools have agreed. He also announced the appointment of SMU Law Professor Yeo Tiong Min as Honorary Senior Counsel, a first in Singapore's legal history. Professor Yeo has been appointed as Senior Counsel ( honoris causa ), or Honorary Senior Counsel, in recognition of his special knowledge in law and his outstanding contribution to the development of the law and to the legal profession. This is the first time that the Senior Counsel Selection Committee has appointed a Senior Counsel ( honoris causa ). Two lawyers were appointed Senior Legal Counsel: Mr Aedit Abdullah, Chief Prosecutor of the Criminal Justice Division of the Attorney-General's Chambers and Mr Kannan Ramesh, managing partner of Tan Kok Quan Partnership.
