Singapore is set to cut its politicians' pay by up to 51 per cent following recommendation by a committee that the government convened in the wake of unusually fierce elections last year in which ministers' high pay came under criticism from the opposition. Eugene Tan, a law professor at the Singapore Management University said the opposition might have won only 6 seats out of 87 [seats in parliament], but that does not commensurate with the very strong sentiments of anger and anxiety that were expressed [during the 2011 elections]. The government's political success, in part comes from its ability to deliver equitable economic growth, which is increasingly challenging.
