SMU law lecturer Eugene Tan is one of 50 names to have been proposed to the committee which is considering appointments of Nominated Members of Parliament (NMPs). After the Special Select Committee finalises eligible candidates next month, the list of persons nominated by the committee will be forwarded to the President for his appointment. Enacted in 1990, the NMP scheme provides for persons who have distinguished themselves or have special knowledge, expertise and practical experience to be appointed to Parliament to speak independently on issues and contribute to the political process.
