NTU has conferred an honorary doctorate on former President of Singapore, Mr S R Nathan. In 1996, Mr Nathan was founding director of the institute renamed the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS). He was also NTU's Chancellor from 1999 to August this year. He now divides his time between commitments at RSIS, the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies and SMU.
