Survey reveals that almost 60% of Singaporeans unfamiliar with the President's duty

Assistant Professor Eugene Tan said Singaporeans are responsible for educating themselves on the presidency and that while an 18-year gap separated the last election and the recent one, presidential elections in future are likely to be contested. He noted that given so many “grey areas” in the Constitution on the president's role, any Government attempt to educate voters will be misperceived as trying to “straitjacket” the office and suggested that the president could help educate Singaporeans by publishing an annual report.
