The Aug 27 presidential election was the most keenly contested ever, and won narrowly by Dr Tony Tan, who was sworn in on Sep 1. SMU chairman Ho Kwon Ping, together with Janadas Devam, associate editor of The Straits Times, presented views on the election, and proposed that Singapore establish an electoral college to nominate presidential candidates and elect one from among them. Assistant Professor Eugene Tan believes that one of the disadvantages of this approach is that it takes away another option for the citizens to directly elect their president.
