Singapore, Friday, 15 April 2011 – The Society for Industrial and Organisational Psychology (SIOP) has conferred the prestigious award of Elected Fellow of the SIOP to Professor David Chan ( 陈振中 ), Deputy Provost and Professor of Psychology of the Singapore Management University (SMU) for his outstanding contributions to the science and practice of psychology. Professor Chan is also Director of the Behavioural Sciences Institute at SMU.
Professor Chan received the award at the SIOP Conference in Chicago, Illinois, USA today (15 April 2011). He is the first Asian to receive this prestigious award.
SIOP, which has several thousand members across almost all countries, is the premier membership organisation for scientists and practitioners in the field of industrial and organizational (I-O) psychology. It is a division within the American Psychological Association and an organizational affiliate of the Association for Psychological Science. I-O psychology is the scientific study of workplace issues at the individual and organisational level. This involves everything from workforce planning, employee selection and leader development to studying job attitudes and job motivation, implementing work teams, and facilitating organisational change.
Fellow status is an honour bestowed upon SIOP Members who have shown evidence of unusual and outstanding contributions or performance in I-O psychology, through research, practice, teaching, administration and/or professional service.
The citation of the Award reads as follows:
“Professor David Chan is widely recognized for his work in research methods, data analysis and personnel selection. He has advanced the field in fundamental ways through his work in longitudinal modeling, multilevel research, test reactions and situational judgment tests. As of 2010, his works have been cited more than 1400 times in journal articles in various disciplines. In addition to serving on national councils and advisory panels, he has contributed to public policies in Singapore through his scientific work with the Prime Minister's Office and various government agencies on large scale personnel selection and national longitudinal survey projects. Dr. Chan is past recipient of several awards including the Edwin Ghiselli Award for Innovative Research Design (1998), William Owens Scholarly Achievement Award (1999) and the Distinguished Early Career Contributions Award (2003).”
In addition to this award, Professor Chan has received several prestigious international scholarly awards from various scientific organizations.
In 2010, he was presented the prestigious award of Elected Fellow of the International Association of Applied Psychology for his outstanding contributions to applied psychology.
In 2003, he made history by being the first non-American to receive the prestigious Distinguished Early Career Contributions Award presented by SIOP. He was ranked 9th worldwide in the list of Top 100 most published researchers of the 1990s in the top journals of Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Professor Chan is editor and board member on several scholarly journals. He also serves on a six-member international committee (which include Nobel Laureate in Economics Professor Daniel Kahneman) formed to develop measures of national well-being across countries .
