Distance-based fares do not mean a fairer option for commuters

Assistant Professor Terence Fan is of the view that public transport fares calculated based on distance do not necessarily benefit or become a fairer option for commuters. He says that the local fare system is calculated based on the distance travelled and not the shortest distance between a passenger's pick-up point and destination, and admitted it will be a challenge for the authorities to adjust the fares based on actual geographical location and distance travelled.
