Can Singapore thrive without liberal arts?

A liberal arts education is different from the Singapore model, where students usually choose a specialisation before they enter university. Instead, students try out a multitude of disciplines and only after two years as an undergraduate do they decide on a major. There are some tentative steps towards a broader education here. The NUS is setting up residential colleges and SMU's School of Social Sciences has two multi-disciplinary tracks.
