More than 1,700 students vie for 300 places in the Singapore Management University's Early Admissions Exercise

New Bachelor of Science (Economics) programme draws overwhelming response

The Singapore Management University (SMU) conducted its early admissions exercise for academic year 2002-03 from 3 December 2001 to 14 January 2002. The exercise received an overwhelming 1,740 applicants for a total of 300 places.

Out of the 600 total places available for the coming new academic year, 300 have been apportioned for applications during the early admissions exercise. The 600 places comprise 450 for the Bachelor of Business Management (BBM), 100 for the Bachelor of Accountancy (BAcc) and 50 for the inaugural intake of the new Bachelor of Science (Economics) programme.

The new Bachelor of Science (Economics) programme was more than five times oversubscribed with 282 applications for 50 places. All other SMU undergraduate programmes also saw substantial increase in applications - compared to the 2001 early admissions exercise, the BBM programme enjoyed a 92% increase with 1,132 applications and the BAcc, a 147% increase with 326 applications.

SMU conducts two rounds of admissions exercises each year. The regular admissions exercise is scheduled in March 2002 for the BBM, BAcc and BSc (Econs) programmes.
