MSc in Applied Finance to Raise Standard of Financial Skills of Professionals

The Singapore Management University (SMU) will launch the Masters of Science (MSc) in Applied Finance programme from January 2002 - SMU's first graduate programme by coursework. This landmark programme aims to raise the standard of practitioners' knowledge and skills in applied finance, a critical training need as identified by authorities and the finance industry.

The programme is ideal for working professionals who wish to enhance their skills in the area of Corporate Finance or Risk Management. Besides covering critical components required to meet the high standards of an MSc degree in Applied Finance, as an added feature, the curriculum is designed to meet the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) examination requirements for those pursuing their CFA designation.

Customised for local and regional financial environment with an international perspective, the MSc in Applied Science programme is an intensive part-time programme to be completed in 11/2 years at the cost of S$21,000. This includes an innovative and invaluable one-week classroom experience at Cornell University or another premier American university.

The programme will be taught by highly qualified SMU faculty and industry professionals. The programme duration comprises three terms of 18 weeks each. All candidates are required to complete 16 compulsory modules (two credits each) and two elective modules (four credits each) for a total of 40 credits.

Up to 40 places are available for the inaugural intake. Admission criteria are:

  • A good university degree
  • A good GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) score
  • At least two years working experience, preferably in the finance industry
