Singapore Management University Freshmen Attend Leadership Camp in Preparation of Undergraduate Programmes

All 500 Singapore Management University (SMU) freshmen will gear up for their undergraduate leadership and teamwork training even before the academic term begins, with a three-day Freshmen camp. The camp will be held at Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) on the island of Pulau Ubin from 23-25 July 2001 for 250 students and from 26-28 July 2001 for the rest of the cohort.

Themed "Define Yourself", this specially designed camp aims to prepare students for the intensive Leadership and Team-building course that forms part of the university core curriculum and is required of every SMU undergraduate. At the camp, the 400 Business Management and 100 Accountancy freshmen will have a foretaste of what SMU's core values are, learn about leadership and teamwork in a unique outdoor setting, and meet the people who will share their classes and lives for the next three to four years.

The final project of the camp is a raft-building exercise on the third day where the students have to apply all that they have learnt about cooperation, planning, and leadership during the camp, to design, bid for resources and build a raft. Six rafts will be constructed after which they will be sailed to test their effectiveness. This will be followed by the highlight of the camp, which is a presentation and hoisting of all the 18 student-designed team flags on the Indiana (a replica of the ship Sir Stamford Raffles used) at OBS. Mr Ho Kwon Ping, Chairman, SMU Board of Trustees, will be guest of honour at the event.
