These appointments underscore SMU’s commitment to delivering excellence in education, research, and community engagement.
On 20 September 2024, SMU President Professor Lily Kong delivered her sixth President's State of the University Address to a gathering of nearly 520 faculty, staff, students, and guests at SMU Hall. The event commenced with a vibrant performance by SMU’s samba band, Samba Masala, fresh from their success at this year’s Samba Festival in Coburg.
In a memorable event that brought together over 600 members of the SMU community, SMU President Professor Lily Kong delivered her fifth President's State of the University Address (PSOUA) on 12 October 2023 at SMU Hall. Breaking away from the traditional format, this year's address embraced a people-centric approach that allowed faculty, staff, and students to share their experiences and achievements through a series of videos, with Prof Kong serving as the narrator.
The Singapore National Day Awards are a means of appreciating various forms of merit and service to Singapore. SMU is proud of the achievements of the 12 members of the University’s faculty and staff who have been recognised in the 2023 National Day Awards for their outstanding performance and their commitment towards Singapore’s tertiary education sector. SMU President Professor Lily Kong gave her third annual President’s State of the University Address in a hybrid event on 24 September 2021, with around 50 members of faculty and staff joining her at SMU Hall and some 650 participating online. She gave a progress report for the past year and discussed SMU’s strategic priorities, planned initiatives and enablers towards achieving the University’s goals for the years ahead.
Should targets be set to ensure women are fully and fairly represented in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) education and careers? SMU President Professor Lily Kong gave a qualified, “Yes”. “We need to set targets without getting into affirmative-action. Women have to be there because of the abilities and what they can contribute. If we can recognise what they could contribute, we would naturally give them the space,” she said.
In her second annual State of the University Address on 3 September, SMU President Professor Lily Kong reviewed what has been an eventful year and revealed SMU’s priorities for the next five years in order to realise Vision 2025. In view of the measures put in place as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Address was a hybrid event with around 50 members of faculty and staff joining her at SMU Hall and some 650 participating online for the Address and live Q&A dialogue.
