MP for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC Hri Kumar Nair has proposed levying a national defence tax on PRs and foreigners in lieu of serving National Service (NS), with the tax proceeds going towards a trust fund that will directly benefit NSmen. SMU Assistant Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan said that this could “monetise” and undermine the significance of NS, and cause more unhappiness among citizens. Instead, the Government should encourage more non-Singaporeans to contribute by serving NS.
