In a commentary, SMU Vice President (Partnerships and Engagement) and Lee Kong Chian Professor of Communication & Technology Lim Sun Sun discussed a victim’s experience of severe online sexual harassment, noting that while harm to victims is immediate, remedies are often slow and fragmented. Citing a SG Her Empowerment’s 2023 report, Prof Lim said most victims want offensive content removed quickly. She described the new Online Safety (Relief and Accountability) Bill and the creation of the Online Safety Commission as a timely and crucial step that empowers users, prioritises victim protection, and ensures safety remains central to the nation’s digital ecosystem.
