As technology takes over education, should we be worried?
In a commentary, SMU Lee Kong Chian Professor of Communication and Technology and Vice President (Partnerships and Engagement) Lim Sun Sun reflected on the intensifying technologisation of education as well as the accompanying challenges we have experienced, and will increasingly encounter. She shared how her research on urban Chinese families’ technology use revealed how growing reliance on edtech platforms could introduce heavy digital parenting burdens, adversely impacting parents, children and families. She also advised how a collective effort can be made to prevent digital platforms from intensifying parental accountability for children’s academic endeavours and letting a phenomenon like punch-in culture entrench itself.
