In a commentary, SMU Professor of Communication and Technology and Vice President (Partnerships and Engagement) Lim Sun Sun discussed why US Surgeon-General Vivek Murthy's call for warning label on social media was a good move. While she found his proposed warning label to oversimplify the concept of screen time, she pointed out that what he has successfully done is to underline that tech companies need to take greater responsibility for the potential effects that social media use has on the mental health of teens. She opined that more action is needed fast as technology evolves ever more rapidly, with more diverse and uncharted applications across new realms.
