Judicial independence must be a principle that Singapore upholds

In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan emphasised the importance of judicial independence, which ensures judges make impartial decisions based on law and evidence, free from undue influence. He highlighted that judicial independence must be balanced with accountability mechanisms to maintain high ethical standards and integrity, thereby cultivating public trust. Assoc Prof Tan stressed that judicial independence is a practical necessity for a well-functioning democracy, not just an abstract concept. He concluded that safeguarding judicial independence in Singapore requires the collective effort of all government departments and the citizens.
