Despite the increasing focus on mental health issues in recent years, a survey conducted by SMU found that most people are reluctant to discuss the topic of suicide with others and resist helping those with suicidal tendencies for fear of making them feel worse. This situation remains similar to two years ago. Led by SMU Principal Lecturer of Statistics Rosie Ching, a team of 140 SMU students collaborated with the Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) from January to March this year to conduct interviews with 5,274 local residents.
