In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan outlined the established rules and procedures to deal with gifts and hospitality and discussed why the public sector is wary of gifts and hospitality. He emphasised that trust and confidence would be badly hit if public interest is seen to be undermined on account of such favours, and urged people in both the public and private sector to look at gifts in their professional dealings more closely and ensure there is no conflict of interest.
