Organised by Singapore Management University (SMU) from 4 to 6 October 2023, the symposium, Industry Project-based Experiential Learning (INDEX) in 21st Century Asia: Industry, Integration, Innovation, Internationalisation, brought together experienced practitioners, educators, and industry experts who shared insights and best practices on curriculum development and models of experiential learning. It was a valuable platform for networking and collaboration among like-minded individuals committed to shaping the future of education, with a focus on industry, integration, innovation, and internationalisation.
The symposium welcomed more than 70 participants, from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the UK, and Vietnam. The international ensemble was complemented by participants from local educational institutions - Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, NUS High School, Singapore Polytechnic, Singapore Institute of Technology, Singapore University of Technology and Design, and Singapore University of Social Sciences. Representatives from SMU’s university partners - Australian National University, Chulalongkorn University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, ESSEC Business School, Hanyang University, Mahidol University, University of the Philippines and VinUniversity also graced the event.
Several distinguished speakers enriched the discourse through their thoughtful sharing at the panel discussions. They included representatives from SMU’s industry partners – DBS Foundation, Anglo American, Halogen Foundation Singapore, dsm-firmenich, X-Inc and G.H.Y. Culture & Media, Google and members of the SMU-X faculty, accomplished alumni, and SMU students.
SMU Provost Professor Timothy Clark said, “INDEX is an innovative pedagogy that reinforces the importance SMU places on connecting classroom concepts with real-world problems. When I speak to employers they remark on our students’ incisiveness and ability to generate creative solutions. Project-based learning has helped to both amplify and hone these critical skills.”
SMU Vice-Provost (Education) Professor Venky Shankararaman said, “The INDEX Symposium offered a dynamic forum for the intersection of academia and industry, allowing them to exchange insights on the profound impact of experiential learning. It was truly inspiring to engage with attendees hailing from across the Asian region and even as far as Canada. This inaugural symposium sets the stage for increased engagement and collaboration among industry and academic partners.”
The Opening Day of the symposium provided a platform for industry veterans and academics to share their expertise and experiences. Topics ranged from balancing academic rigour with industry pertinence, instances of successful ecosystem creation within industries to strategies that integrate industry into project-based experiential learning.
One of the day’s highlights was 'The Circular Classroom: Every Stitch Counts', an experiential activity where participants repurposed old school uniforms into new and stylish creations. This activity was a fitting embodiment of SMU’s commitment to innovative thinking and sustainable living.
On Day 2, participants explored the importance of equipping students with global competencies and future workforce readiness. Innovation, gamification, the potential of AI to invigorate project-based experiential learning, and the pivotal role of cultural intelligence were some areas of discussion that resonated with participants.
On the final day, participants reflected on significant questions about the purpose, value and impact of experiential learning for diverse stakeholders, drawing meaningful insights that will direct their work going forward. There were also reverse mentoring sessions facilitated by SMU-X students. By sidestepping traditional roles, these promoted a dynamic exchange of ideas and provided seasoned professionals with fresh, forward-looking perspectives.
Additionally, participants had the opportunity to witness the launch of an exclusive X-Scent fragrance, Turning Possibilities into Realities. Each participant received a complimentary bottle, with the option to purchase additional bottles. Proceeds will support the SMU-X Opportunity Award, an initiative that seeks to support financially disadvantaged students embarking on SMU-X Overseas (SMU-XO) courses.
Many who attended the symposium expressed appreciation for the organising team and the valuable knowledge-sharing. Dr Ana Katrina de Jesus, University of the Philippines Los Banos, said, “Thank you for the warmth, passion, and dedication of the entire SMU-X team!” Another overseas participant, Dr Hyunsook Oh, Hanyang University, said, “Thank you for planning and hosting such a great event. It was also an opportunity to gain future-oriented insights. Above all, I was touched by the warm hospitality and thoughtful consideration.” Dr Emilia Wong, NUS High School of Math and Science, is already looking forward to the next symposium. She said, “It's been a wonderful 3 days and I shared with my colleagues that we must attend the next one!”
Beyond invigorating discussions and immersive activities, participants also bonded during delightful dinners and convivial gatherings. SMU-X hopes that the networks and collaborative spirit fostered during the symposium will continue to strengthen a culture of innovation and shape the future of education - in Singapore, the region and beyond.
