3737-strong Class of 2023 is largest batch of graduates, Learning law and medicine, SMU student hopes to contribute to healthcare industry

Gini Wong was inspired to join the medical profession since young, hence she pursued the SMU-Duke NUS pathway when she joined SMU. Having successfully obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from SMU, she has started her Doctor of Medicine programme in mid-July. She feels that law and medicine are deeply intertwined, and modules such as medical law which she took in law school have enabled her to understand the applicability of law to the medical field and gained a deeper insight into controversial legal issues in medicine. Gini was one of 3,737 graduates from the Class of 2023, the largest batch of graduates since SMU’s inception. The opening ceremony of Commencement 2023 was graced by Justice Judith Prakash. Among the 1,368 Master’s degree graduates is a newlywed couple who took on the SMU Master of IT in Business (MITB) as a ‘eight-semester long honeymoon’. With a lifelong learning mindset, Dr Chai Phing Chian and Dr Lim Su May, who both hold a PhD in Biology, noted the potential of applying analytics and AI across various sectors and wanted to equip themselves with future-ready skillsets. At the Opening Ceremony event, SMU also conferred upon Mr JY Pillay the Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) for his exceptional contributions to public service, business and education.
