In a commentary, SMU Professor of Communication & Technology and Vice President of Partnerships and Engagement Lim Sun Sun shared why the deaths in a downed passenger plane and an imploded submersible became a source of jokes and gave her views on when online humour crosses the line. She pointed out that online platforms must take greater responsibility for ensuring that their community standards continue to adhere to societal norms that enjoy broad consensus, and that the standards have to be regularly reviewed as online users seek to constantly push against the limits of acceptability.
