In a joint commentary, SMU Associate Dean of Postgraduate Programmes and Professor of Finance (Education) Benedict Koh and Joelle H Fong, Assistant Professor at the NUS Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, discussed the findings of a study by SMU, NUS and The Wharton School. The study featured a representative sample comprising close to 6,000 older Singapore residents aged 50 and above. The survey was conducted in 2018-2019, through the Singapore Life Panel. The research, published in the Journal of Economics of Ageing in 2021, indicates that trust in financial advisers can affect older Singaporeans' propensity to undertake financial transactions, and called for active steps to be taken to move towards a financial landscape where financial advisers prescribe professional advice instead of peddling financial products.
