Not allowing disability to control their destiny, two youth achieve degrees with extraordinary perseverance

SMU held its virtual graduation and career fair yesterday. 23-year-old Caleb Tay Jin Howe, who is graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Business Management, was diagnosed with cone dystrophy at the age of 5 and is left with 10% visual acuity of a normal person, and had to work extra hard through his educational journey. He shared that he joined SMU as a shy and passive person, but has grown to become outgoing and confident. Other than the support from his family, he is also grateful to the support and care from the University, including scribes and student helpers who provide support and assistance during lessons and exams.  23-year-old Faustina Joy Fernando suffers from dyslexia, but with perseverance, she has made it to the Dean's list twice and is graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Laws.  Undaunted by the label of having a ‘learning disability’, she was determined to defy expectations. Not only did she achieve excellent academic results, she was also active in mooting and pro bono work.
