Planning for uni places needs rethink

In the first of the ST-SMU Reimagining Universities four-part series, Education Minister Ong Ye Kung talks about whether it makes sense to use hard numbers to plan for university places. He discusses how the higher education landscape will have to evolve to stay relevant, what the Ministry of Education can do to encourage students to engage in lifelong learning, how the Government should lead the way to change qualifications-based hiring, as well as his views on alternative models of higher education and aptitude-based admissions. On lifelong learning, Mr Ong noted that the SMU Academy offers stackable modules leading to the award of graduate certificates, graduate diplomas and master's degrees. The ST Education Forum 2020 themed ‘Reimagining Universities’, organised in partnership with SMU, will be held on 15 February, at SMU School of Law.
