In a commentary, SMU Assistant Professor of Law Benjamin Joshua Ong opined that a firm response to acts of foreign domestic worker (FDW) abuse – and similar acts by others – is entirely warranted. While he understands that adherence to established principle can be challenging when faced with the most egregious acts, he highlighted the importance of having a dispassionate view of issues and to keep in mind that the punishment must fit the crime. Asst Prof Ong also discussed other ways to meet the goals of sentencing which can replace or supplement imprisonment when it comes to FDW abuse.
