In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan shared his views on the proposed Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Bill. He noted how there have been diverse responses since the Bill was proposed. He said that some have criticised the proposed Bill as being an excuse to curb academic freedom, as well as impose restrictions on legitimate news sources. Assoc Prof Tan opined that this new Bill would not only effectively promote responsible speech, but also specifically tackle the issue of online falsehoods which result in harm to public interest.
