Appreciating Chinese language and culture through Southern China

In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan opined how Chinese Singaporeans have been influenced by the culture of cities in Northern China such as Beijing and Shanghai, instead of the South. This has resulted in a different perception being formed. Assoc Prof Tan suggested that it is perhaps timely to “re-examine” how we view China, and to rethink the way in which young Singaporeans are being introduced to China. He explained that it is important to give young Singaporeans a fair perspective and cited the measures introduced to preserve Chinese culture and learning in Singapore, which are aimed at ensuring that Singaporeans do not become completely isolated from Chinese culture and the language.
