SMU "gardeners" win gold again at horticulture competition for sustainable growth project

In 2015, SMU GROW was launched to promote sustainable living and to create a green community through campus gardening and advocacy. SMU GROW won the gold award for such efforts, at the "Community in Bloom" Awards organised by the National Parks Board.

SMU has set aside an area for sustainable gardening which is managed by students, employing technology to monitor the health and condition of the plants. SMU is also committed to helping its alumni with their green initiatives. The B3 café – situated within SMU campus – has partnered with TreeDots, which was founded by SMU alumni, to make full use of rejected produce so as to minimise food wastage. It also uses harvests from its campus “farm” to prepare some of their meals and has also actively encouraged the SMU community to donate their excess cups for use within the cafe. SMU undergraduates Chua Kai Yun, Kuah Chiew Shian and Charmaine Song shared on the positive learnings they had achieved during their experiences of urban farming and efforts to eliminate food wastage.
