In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan believed that the recent national service (NS) deferment issue regarding 17-year-old footballer Benjamin James Davis is all about equity and that the Ministry of Defence is right in ensuring that enlistment criteria are fair and applicable to all male citizens.  He added that such a cause has to be closely guarded and anything less would result in NS losing public support.
