SMU's PhD candidate develops software to help evaluate 'online' products

Imagine if you wanted to buy a product online but are not sure of its ability or product warranty. Considering the millions of products and brands sold online and also the countless reviews on the products, what is the best platform for buyers to make a wise decision in search of the best products? Faced with this challenge, SMU post-graduate student, Maksim Tkachenko, a PhD candidate from the School of Information Systems, was motivated to find a solution. He created a software using a data mining method to evaluate the millions of online reports on a product. In a video produced by SMU recently, he shared the story of how he produced the software. SMU Assistant Professor of Information Systems Hady W.Lauw observed that at one point, Maksim encountered an unexpected situation – while one dataset was sufficient, the other was narrowly focused on one aspect. "However, we realised that the dataset still provided many realistic examples of comparisons and it could be used in simulations to provide insights on how the model behaves in response to different amount of product information," said Professor Lauw.
