In a commentary, SMU Assistant Professor of Law Tan Seow Hon explored the viability of commercial surrogacy in Singapore and the social implications it might have on society as a whole. Assistant Prof Tan noted that while commercial surrogacy is not a crime, it is not explicitly legalised or condoned in Singapore. However, the Ministry of Health's rules permit artificial insemination procedures only for married couples in certain situations, mostly involving medical or fertility issues. Thus, practically, surrogacy is not an option unless an intended father is able to inseminate the surrogate through other means.
