Hydrogen a more sustainable bet for S'pore's energy future

In a commentary, SMU undergraduate Jason Tan Han Wei, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Social Science with a double major in Political Science and Sociology, noted that hydrogen gas may be the next solution to complement Singapore’s use of renewable energy sources such as solar energy. Hydrogen has the highest content of any common fuel by weight and acts as an energy carrier used to move, store and deliver energy. Test-bedding of such technology has begun off Singapore’s coast on Semakau Island. However, the use of hydrogen still faces challenges in the form of costs, supporting infrastructure and safety. Policymakers will need to address these barriers in order to ensure that such usage can bring about better sustainability in the energy eco-system.
