Singapore Management University has won the inaugural Leadership in Sustainable Design and Performance Award – Institutional sub-category which is jointly conferred by the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) and the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).

Mr Sim Teow Hong, SMU Senior Vice President, received the award from Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli at the SGBC Gala Dinner on 6 September 2016.

The Leadership in Sustainable Design and Performance Award is one of two award categories under the SGBC-BCA Sustainability Leadership Awards 2016, the other being Business Leadership in Sustainability Award. The Awards recognise buildings and businesses for being green and sustainable in an innovative way, and aim to raise awareness and advocate for green buildings to members of the general public.

Mr Sim Teow Hong said, “We are pleased to be conferred the SGBC-BCA award for sustainable institutional design and performance. As a responsible corporate citizen, SMU has always been conscious of the need to play our part in enhancing sustainability. Among the things we do include adopting a Green Campus design, proactively engaging with various stakeholders on sustainability issues, learning from the best practices of others, adapting various measures innovatively to improve water and energy efficiency as well as waste reduction at SMU. We would like to express our appreciation to SGBC and BCA for the tremendous support and guidance they have provided SMU over the years in our journey towards greater sustainability.”

For the Leadership in Sustainable Design and Performance Award category, aside from the exterior or façade of the building, the judging process also took into account the softer aspects, such as the management’s commitment to sustainability and the efforts taken to educate its tenants and occupants on leading a more sustainable lifestyle.

SMU, together with the other winners of the two award categories, will represent Singapore at the World Green Building Council Asia Pacific Leadership in Green Buildings Awards 2016, which will be held in India on 5 October 2016.
