The Office of Research (ORe) recently organised introductory seminars on Intellectual Property (IP) and Research IP Management on 26 and 27 March 2015 together with the IP Academy of Singapore. The trainer, Mr Daniel Collopy, is a Special Counsel at the Singapore firm of Spruson and Ferguson (Asia) and has been a Senior Specialist Counsel at IP Academy of Singapore and an IP Consultant with Exploit Technologies Pte Ltd, A*STAR.

During the seminars, Daniel introduced topics including types of IP and IP ownership, patents and patentability, as well as IP considerations when negotiating research contracts. Daniel also illustrated those concepts with interesting case studies. More than 30 SMU staff attended both sessions, with a majority from the School of Information Systems.

The feedback was highly positive and the participants found that the topics covered were relevant and helpful. Faculty were interested not just in IP as applied to research projects, but also to their teaching duties as well. Some participants found that the exposition of the different types of IP was useful in providing a better understanding of how each type of IP can be used in various circumstances, while others felt that the seminars were very informative especially through the sharing of case studies and examples. In fact, many participants wished for additional sessions in order to allow for more sharing of case studies and interactions with the trainer.
