SMU students to showcase a different side of Raffles as Bencoolen governor

Gelar Budaya (GAYA) is an annual arts and cultural production in SMU showcasing Indonesian culture to Singaporeans. It is produced by SMU Komunitas Indonesia (SMUKI), the Indonesian Student Community in SMU, and was pioneered by a group of Indonesian students. This year’s production, Malabero, offers audiences a different side of the founding father of Singapore Sir Stamford Raffles, who had also governed Bencoolen, Indonesia and struggled to unify the diverse locals. GAYA2015 has grown to be a more international community with participants from not only Indonesia, but also Malaysia, China, and Vietnam. Kenny Koesoemo, producer of GAYA2015 and president of SMU Komunitas Indonesia said: “In celebrating SG50, we also draw out a similarity of the roots of Singapore and Indonesia through the story of Sir Stamford Raffles. So this year’s Gelar Budaya is a cultural showcase that not only Indonesians relate to, but also everyone from different nationalities could enjoy and feel connected to.”
