Ho Kwon Ping urged for more measures to prevent abuse of Internal Security Act

Chairman of the SMU Board of Trustees and Executive Chairman of Banyan Tree Holdings, Ho Kwon Ping delivered his third lecture under the Institute of Policy Studies – Nathan (IPS-Nathan) lecture series on security and sustainability. He said that Singapore should maintain its Internal Security Act (ISA), but called for measures to prevent abuse of the Act, particularly when the country might not be ruled by the People's Action Party in 50 years’ time. Having been a political detainee himself, Mr Ho said that abolishing the ISA would bring more risks in view of the rising threats of terrorism the Western government is facing. He also called for the phasing out of caning and capital punishment, as well as the introduction of National Service for new male citizens and Singaporean women.
