Future jobs

SMU President Professor Arnoud De Meyer commented on the evolution of jobs in the future and the need for constant adaption. He shared his insights on whether our education system is equipped to catch up with this seemingly exponential growth. Prof De Meyer said that jobs which involve knowledge processing in a relatively standardised way will be taken over by computerisation and automation, and that ‘cobotisation’ – the collaboration and interaction between people and robots – will be much higher in the future than it is today. Robots will perform the repetitive tasks, while people will manage the more sophisticated tasks, such as decision-making. He also commented on the changing role of faculty in universities. More than just imparting knowledge, they now need to help students make the distinction between good and bad knowledge, structure information and provide them with experiences where they can apply the knowledge. He believes that there is a need for continuous learning and technological up-scaling in order for the population to adapt to the changing world.
