Rethink undergrad studies abroad for public scholars

Co-Director of the SMU Centre for Scholars’ Development, Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan shared his thoughts on whether a local undergraduate education for our Public Service Commission (PSC) scholars make them more or less capable of serving Singapore in the Public Service. He recognised that Singapore universities have attained good university rankings globally, but also acknowledged that there are merits to sending our top students to universities overseas. He believed that it is a matter of striking the right balance. He was of the opinion that it should be a requirement for PSC scholars to spend part of their tertiary education in Singapore as it would enable our future policymakers and top bureaucrats to have a better understanding of Singapore society and be in an environment where they are immersed in many of the issues and challenges that Singaporeans face.
