Academics interviewed: Improvement of measures introduced after last general election

SMU Associate Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan said the Government appears to be reserving some “firepower” to create greater impact in its Budget for the next two years after which elections will be due. Also, the measures in the Pioneer Generation Package will take time to implement, hence the announcement this year. If the senior citizens are pleased with the measures, they may influence the younger generation positively, but the package cannot be considered to be “vote-buying” as the government could have made it a one-off package. In any case, it is the right thing to do whether or not the Government will gain any political capital from it.
