PM Lee directs Registration Officer to revise register of electors before March 31

SMU Associate Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan pointed out that it is important to revise the register of electors regularly, so that once there is a general election or by-election, all eligible voters, including those who turned 21 after the register was last revised, would be able to vote. He added that it is unlikely there will be a surprise election as the government still has many uncompleted items on its legislative programme. Associate Prof Tan added that Parliament’s current term can end on 9 October 2016 at the latest. This means that the next general election can be held in January 2017 at the latest, since a general election must be held within three months of the dissolution of Parliament. The Government has announced that the first session of Parliament will end after the Budget debate. The second term will begin in May and the Government will draw up a new legislative programme for this term.
