Bullying online

SMU law student Dierdre Grace Morgan took part in a panel discussion on cyberbullying. Commenting on new anti-cyberbullying laws introduced in some countires, she said, “It may seem a bit harsh, but if you think of the consequences that people may suffer… the punishments may be required to deter people... It’s a question of balancing between what we want to achieve from the legislation as well as ensuring that the punishment is not out of proportion.” She also stresses the importance of appropriate online conduct: “The freedom of expression online must be complemented with a corresponding duty of responsible use… We must be prepared to look beyond our own subjective views on specific issues.”
