Singapore sees more poor people: High medical costs and growing income gap prompted the Govt to act at the end of last year

Researchers at SMU’s Lien Centre for Social Innovation felt that the lack of an official poverty line in Singapore caused many Singaporeans not to realise the extent and seriousness of poverty in Singapore. They felt that the government should join the ranks of other countries which have established a poverty line to define and measure poverty. The article noted that Singapore’s Gini coefficient is second only to Hong Kong among advanced economies. While the Hong Kong government has established a poverty line in September 2013, the Singapore government has not. The Singapore government has also not set a minimum wage.
