Businesses can still send promotional text messages despite consumers signing up with the Do Not Call registry; NMP Eugene Tan criticises new rule for disregarding consumers’ rights

Commenting on the recent changes made to the Do Not Call Registry, SMU Associate Professor of Law and NMP Eugene said, “One cannot make the assumption that just because a person is a regular customer, he will not mind receiving regular promotional text messages. Consumers have the right not to be disturbed. This amendment takes us back to square one. Consumers who do not wish to be called still have to inform businesses one by one.” He also felt that the new rule dilutes the significance of the law and consumers who have high expectations of the law will be disappointed.
