Observers: Look deeper to find the underlying causes of the riot

Referring to the recent Little India riots, SMU Associate Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan said because of the seriousness of the incident, it is necessary to set up a committee of inquiry (COI), as people will want to know what caused it and how it can be avoided. But the COI should go one step further to find out if there are deeper reasons that led the foreign workers to react so violently. It would be too simplistic to say that the riot was caused by the influence of alcohol or improper crowd management. He added that it appears there is some discontent, fury and anxiety between locals and foreign workers, so it will be a pity if the COI were to propose only more rules and restrictions. Perhaps the COI can include representatives from non-governmental organisations to represent the foreign workers. Associate Prof Tan suggested that Singapore can also take this opportunity to focus on and re-examine the topic of immigration.
