Why Singapore is a class apart

At a recent conference in Singapore, organised by Singapore’s Human Capital Leadership Institute (HCLI), a senior official of the Economic Development Board shared the fascinating story of how when Singapore was keen to develop itself as an aeronautical hub, it had wooed Jet engine maker Rolls Royce to set up manufacturing facilities for its turbines in Singapore and had overhauled its education system to better prepare employees for the plant. It is this kind of forward thinking and attention to detail that is keeping Singapore from being swallowed by the Asian giants. The HCLI itself – a think-tank jointly promoted by Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower, SMU and the Singapore Economic Development Board – is an example of how Singapore spends its public resources today for a better tomorrow.
