Indonesian Universities look abroad to gain edge

Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) representatives will be meeting with those of SMU on Monday. SMU President Professor Arnoud De Meyer said that the institution is keen to work with other Southeast Asian universities in an effort to learn from and share knowledge with regional counterparts. He said that the demand for education is increasing exponentially, and that “We need to find different ways to collaborate and find ways to learn and share knowledge to increase opportunities for education.” Both President De Meyer and UPS Assistant Director of the faculties of business, law and social and political sciences, Nathanael Santoso, said that an emphasis on a liberal arts education, which teaches students how to think analytically and “learn how to learn,” is imperative for greater graduate success. Prof De Meyer added that the 2015 Association of Southeast Asian Nations Free Trade Agreement will play an important role in shaping the region’s education systems. Therefore, universities will have to adjust to the changes made by globalisation. UPH and SMU’s co-operation could pave the way for greater associations between universities in the region.
