Bone marrow donor list 'woefully small'

According to statistics released by the Bone Marrow Donor Programme, nearly 80 per cent of the requests for bone marrow donations in Singapore have gone unanswered. Reasons for the low response rate included fears about the medical procedure and a lack of awareness of the need for bone marrow. SMU alumna Grace Tong is one of the few bone marrow donors in Singapore. She had signed up as a donor when she was a SMU undergraduate in 2003 and made an anonymous donation in 2009 to 15-year-old Queenstown Secondary student Muhamed Reza, who was diagnosed with leukaemia when he was 11 and he had since made a full recovery.
