The significance of free MRT rides

The one-year trial of a free pre-peak MRT travel scheme has sparked much debate since its announcement. While some thought that such a scheme marked the end of the Singapore Government’s “no free lunch” mentality, others thought this scheme was a short-term policy adjustment due to pressure from the people. SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan commented that such a move by the Government was a “political necessity.” As many Singaporeans used public transport on a daily basis, they would blame the Government every time they encountered a squeeze while travelling. In other words, the Government would be losing votes every day if they did not do anything about the situation.
